CLINICAL RESEARCH
Professor Konstantinos Syrigos has served as Global and National Principal Investigator in
international multicentre or IIS (Investigator Initiated Studies) Phase I-II clinical trials.
His main research work is the development of new drugs and translational research in
collaboration with international centres in North America and Europe.

In addition, the 3 rd University Pathology-Oncology Unit has a well-organized and ISO
Certified Clinical Studies Office.

He participates in one hundred and fifty-two (152) international multicentre studies
conducted with the approval of the National Organisation for Medicines (EOF) and within
the framework of international Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines.

LABORATORY WORK

  • His PhD thesis (M.D.) deals with the study of adrenal steroidogenesis in patients with
polycystic ovary syndrome and was conducted at the Pathological Physiology Clinic
and Laboratory (Director Professor H. Moutsopoulos).
  • His postdoctoral thesis (Ph.D.) discusses the use of monoclonal antibodies in the
treatment of tumorous diseases, as carriers of a toxic agent. Specifically, he developed
a new drug that was a complex of a monoclonal antibody and a toxic agent. The
efficacy and toxicity of the drug was tested in cell cultures, animal models and led to
a Phase I Clinical Trial in bladder cancer patients.

Delivered in the Tumour Targeting Laboratory of the Institute of Cancer Research Fund,
Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, University of London (Director
Professor Karol Sicora).

  • Associate Researcher of the BRFAA – Biomedical Research Foundation of the
Academy of Athens, in the field of Clinical Oncology, following the agreement of the
Athens School of Medicine, the Board of Directors of the BRFAA and the Board of
    Directors of "Sotiria" Hospital
  • Visiting Professor of Thoracic Oncology at the Yale Cancer Center, Yale School of
Medicine, following the agreement of the Athens School of Medicine, the Yale
School of Medicine and the Oncology Center. As the principal investigator, the main
    focus of his research is:

a) The study of the intracellular EGFR pathway in Lung Cancer and its exploitation for more
effective targeting with newer biologic drugs.

b) Finding reliable molecular markers for the application of immunotherapy in cancer
patients.

  • During the years 1989-1993 he participated in the establishment and organization of
the Laboratory of Immunology and Molecular Biology of the 1st Propaedeutical
Surgical Clinic of the University of Athens (Director Professor V.H. Golematis).
  • Under the guidance of Professor Massimo Pignatelli (Department of Histopathology,
Hammersmith Hospital) he worked on the tissue expression of adhesion molecules in
healthy and pathological tissues, with particular interest in investigating the clinical
relevance of their pathological expression in tumorous diseases.
  • Under the guidance of Professor A. A. Epenetos (Department of Clinical Oncology,
Hammersmith Hospital) he worked on the development of new strategies for cancer
    treatment using Targeted Therapy techniques.
  • The Oncology Laboratory was organized and fully equipped within the framework of
the Oncology Unit of the 3rd University Pathology Clinic, on his own initiative and
with the contribution of a private person. During the 20 years of its operation,
methods of molecular biology, immunology and cell culture were developed. A
method for quantitative measurement of circulating adhesion molecules was
developed for most of these molecules. Three biologists and one preparator work in
the Oncology Laboratory under his supervision and postgraduate students and
physicians are working on their PhD thesis. In recent years, the Oncology Laboratory
has developed cooperation through research projects with the following renowned
